Effective Conversation Strategies

Lecture 3 of the series "Climate Change B: Dealing with Climate Change Deniers" — Block: Communication Techniques in Dialogue. This manuscript explains in a factual and practical manner how empathic listening builds trust, which conversational techniques reduce resistance, how confrontation can be avoided and open listening promoted, and what role questions play in dialogue. Statements are based on published literature and established communication recommendations; uncertainties and limits of the evidence are noted.

Part 1 (20 minutes): Basics and clear explanation with analogies and examples

The central communicative starting point when speaking with people who deny human-caused climate change or are skeptical of it is not primarily the delivery of further facts, but the building of trust. This can be explained with a concrete analogy: If you are supposed to repair a completely unfamiliar electronic device, you will first ask the person how the device is normally used, what expectations exist, and what problems have occurred so far. Only then do you open the housing. Applied to conversations, this means that listening and understanding do the preparatory work that makes any later technical explanation possible in the first place.

Empathic listening begins with active interest in the other person's perspective, without immediate judgment. A concrete example from a typical everyday scenario: A person says they do not trust climate scientists because historical climate fluctuations are known. A purely confrontational reply with scientific data will often trigger defensiveness. Instead, a short mirroring of the statement is useful, for example: "You are worried because the climate has always fluctuated in history." This mirroring does not take the person's statement away from them, but shows that you have listened. Afterwards, you can follow up with an open question that prompts the other person to explain themselves, for example: "What would be missing for you to consider the current findings relevant?"

Empathy here does not mean agreeing with the content on all points, but first acknowledging the emotional state and the reasons for doubt. The scientific consensus on climate change is well documented; for example, the IPCC reports systematically summarize the state of physical research (IPCC, 2021) and scientific reviews indicate a broad consensus on human-caused warming (NASA: Scientific Consensus). At the same time, social science research shows that purely fact-oriented corrections often have limited effects on identity-relevant or emotionally charged topics and can increase resistance (Lewandowsky et al., 2017). This empirical finding underlies the emphasis on listening and trust-building.

Another illustrative image is that of bridge-building: Facts are stones, but without stable bridge piers made of trust and shared understanding, many explanations collapse again. Practically, this means that a conversation ideally proceeds in three phases: first understanding (listening), then jointly clarifying goals and uncertainties, then careful information delivery, with the information connected to the interlocutor's existing frame of thought.

Part 2 (20 minutes): Deepening and introduction of key technical terms

Key technical terms that structure the approach are empathic listening, mirroring, validation, resistance (or reactance), motivated reasoning and debunking. Empathic listening describes a communicative stance that Carl Rogers identified as one of the core conditions for change; Rogers elaborated that unconditional positive regard, empathy and congruence are basic prerequisites for productive conversations (Rogers, 1957). Practically, this means that the interlocutor is clearly taken seriously, without lecturing or coercion.

Mirroring is a concrete technique of empathic listening: core statements or feelings of the other person are returned in one's own words. Mirroring is not meant to factually confirm, but to show understanding. Validation complements mirroring by acknowledging that concerns or doubts are understandable in a certain context. An example of validation would be: "It is understandable to be skeptical when different experts have made different statements." Validation disarms emotionality and reduces defensive resistance.

The term resistance stands for the phenomenon that people react with hardening to a perceived threat to their identity or freedom. In communication research this phenomenon is also described as reactance. A closely related explanation is the concept of motivated reasoning, which describes that people often perceive and interpret information selectively in order to protect existing beliefs or identity components. Lewandowsky and colleagues discuss in review articles how such cognitive and affective mechanisms can limit the effectiveness of fact-correcting interventions (Lewandowsky et al., 2017).

Debunking denotes the targeted refutation of false claims. The debunking literature recommends not repeating myths without clearly labeling them as false, offering a short and easily understandable explanation that replaces the incorrect narrative, and providing supporting facts that are easy to remember (Cook & Lewandowsky, Debunking Handbook). From this practice follows that corrections should be applied in a more structured and context-sensitive way: prior empathic listening increases the likelihood that debunking will not be immediately rejected.

The practice of foregrounding questions instead of statements has several psychological mechanisms. Open questions promote self-exploration and reduce the feeling of being lectured. Questions activate the respondent's ability to formulate reasons themselves, which goes beyond the mere reception of information and strengthens self-autonomy. Communication teams that prepare materials for the public therefore recommend first asking, listening, then summarizing and only then introducing new information (Climate Outreach; Yale Program on Climate Change Communication). This sequence is empirically motivated because it reduces identity-based resistance and increases cognitive readiness to integrate new information.

At the same time, it is important to emphasize that evidence for long-term attitude change from a single conversation is limited. Studies on knowledge and attitude change show that repeated, context-adapted dialogues and trust-building measures are more effective in the long term than one-off interventions (Lewandowsky et al., 2017; Climate Outreach). Therefore, conversational strategies should be part of a longer-term communication practice if the goal is actual opinion change.

Part 3 (10 minutes): Concrete applications, limits and thought exercises

Concrete application 1: Reception situation. Start with an open opening question such as "What worries you most about this topic?" and mirror the answer in one sentence. If the person cites specific facts, ask about their source or about the process by which they reached that conclusion. This creates a conversational framework in which corrections later appear as an offer and not as an attack.

Concrete application 2: Dealing with strong resistance. If interlocutors react clearly negatively, it is often sensible to postpone the discussion of facts for the time being and instead explore common interests, such as concern for local quality of life, health or economic security. Such common points of connection later enable joint problem discussion without the discussion immediately polarizing.

Concrete application 3: Questions instead of statements. Formulate hypotheses as questions: instead of "Science shows that…" you can ask: "Under what circumstances would you say that scientific findings are relevant?" This wording invites reflection and reduces defensiveness.

Limits of the methods: There are situations in which established relationship patterns, strongly identity-based beliefs or external influences (such as media echo chambers) limit the effect of individual conversations. The scientific literature documents that corrections in such cases are harder to effect and that interventions that directly threaten group belonging or identity often produce effects in the opposite direction (Lewandowsky et al., 2017). Likewise, the evidence for long-term attitude change through short conversations is limited; sustainable effect requires repeated interaction, trust and institutional credibility.

Small thought exercises for reflection and practice: Take five minutes and think of a person in your environment who is skeptical about climate change. Formulate two open questions internally with which you would start a conversation, and note one short mirroring sentence you could use after the first answer. Then consider which common concern you could identify as a point of connection. This exercise helps to practice the basic stance of listening and to prepare for actual conversational situations.

In conclusion, it should be emphasized once again: the scientific basis for human-caused global warming is broad and systematically summarized (IPCC, NASA). The conversational techniques described here are based on research findings regarding the effectiveness of empathic listening, motivated reasoning and debunking strategies (Rogers, Lewandowsky et al., Cook & Lewandowsky) as well as on practice-oriented handouts for communication with skeptical target groups (Climate Outreach, Yale Program). Their application requires patience, situational sensitivity and the willingness to see conversations as a longer-term process. Where evidence gaps exist, this has been stated explicitly in the text: in particular, simple, universally effective recipes for deeply rooted identity-based rejections are lacking; further research and long-term interventions are necessary here.
