In this part I explain how cattle and pigs are kept in different housing systems and what the basic differences are between conventional and organic systems as well as between housing types such as open barns, loose housing or pasture systems. I use easy-to-understand comparisons and examples.
Imagine a house: some people live in an apartment in a high-rise building, others live on a farm with a garden. Both ways of living have advantages and disadvantages — the same applies to animal husbandry systems. "Conventional" in livestock farming usually means the farm operates according to the applicable legal minimum requirements and is economically oriented toward efficiency. Important technical terms clearly explained
Loose housing / open barn: A loose housing system is a form of housing where animals can move freely (as opposed to tethering). Open barn generally describes a construction with greater air exchange, daylight and often open fronts that facilitate a more natural housing environment [4][2].

Concrete applications — What can a farm do?
If a farm wants to improve animal welfare, it can work on several levers simultaneously: for cattle, for example, better cubicle design (adequate lying area, soft bedding), regular pasture access, well-designed alleys and sufficient feeding places so that low-ranking animals have access. For pigs, especially important are: sufficient enrichment material (e.g. straw, where technically possible), group sizes that reduce social stress, good feeding provision and hygiene, and monitoring for early signs of tail biting [4].
