Part 1 (20 minutes): What does "species-appropriate" mean? A clear introduction
The term "species-appropriate" (German: "artgerecht") is often used when discussing animal husbandry. In science and at international organizations it refers to how well the conditions in which an animal lives match its physical and psychological needs. The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) frames animal welfare as: it is about how an animal copes with the conditions in which it lives. That means: not only health and bodily functions are important, but also whether an animal can perform its natural behaviours and whether it experiences suffering or stress (OIE).
A simple analogy for 15‑year-olds: Imagine two rooms, both with a bed, water and food. In one room you are allowed to play, talk with friends, study and move around; in the other you must stand alone in a corner all the time, cannot move and are not allowed to speak. Both rooms provide basic care, but only one also supports your well-being. For animals it is similar: food and shelter are important, but behaviour, social contact, movement and a safe environment also count toward species-appropriate husbandry.
In practice several aspects are examined that are often mentioned in the animal welfare debate. A common, easily understood model are the so-called "Five Freedoms". These name basic areas that should be fulfilled: freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom from discomfort (e.g. through suitable housing), freedom from pain, injury and disease (through prevention and treatment), freedom to express normal behaviour (sufficient space, suitable environment, social contact) and freedom from fear and distress. This framework is widely cited worldwide to describe minimum requirements for housing conditions (FAWC / RSPCA).
Concrete examples help to clarify the idea: Chickens naturally show perching and scratching behaviour; dustbathing is important for them to remove parasites and maintain plumage. Pigs have a strong need to root in the ground for food (rooting). Cattle are ruminants and need time for grazing and resting so that digestion and well-being function properly. If such behaviours are chronically suppressed, this leads to stress, behavioural disorders or health problems. These examples are described in the literature as typical natural behaviours (Encyclopaedia Britannica: Chicken, Pig).
There is scientific consensus that species-appropriate husbandry must consider both physical and behavioural needs; however, exact design and standards differ by species, production system and the purpose of the keeping. Where research gaps exist, these are explicitly noted in later parts.
Part 2 (20 minutes): Key terms and concepts
To begin with behavioral biology, some terms are useful. "Ethology" is the science that deals with animal behaviour, especially behaviour in natural or more natural environments and with the evolutionary backgrounds of that behaviour. Ethologists distinguish between innate and learned behaviours and investigate how behaviour supports survival and reproduction (Ethology, Encyclopaedia Britannica).
"Instinct" refers to a set of behaviours that are largely innate and often appear as complex, species-specific patterns. Some specialized texts use the term cautiously because behaviour is rarely entirely genetically determined; often innate tendencies interact with environmental influences. Classical examples are certain courtship rituals or nest-building actions in birds that can be performed without a model if the environmental conditions are right (Instinct, Encyclopaedia Britannica).
"Imprinting" is a special form of rapid and usually lifelong learning processes during a sensitive phase; a well-known example is filial imprinting in chicks to the first conspicuous moving form they see. Imprinting is important for social bonding and orientation in some bird and mammal species (Imprinting, Encyclopaedia Britannica).
Learning includes various processes by which animals adjust their behaviour based on experience. These include habituation (getting used to harmless stimuli), classical and operant conditioning (associations between stimulus and response or behaviour and consequence) as well as more complex forms such as spatial learning or social learning. Learning ability is a central part of an animal's adaptability to changed living conditions (Learning, Encyclopaedia Britannica).
Another important concept is "behavioural flexibility" or "adaptability". Animals differ in how well they can adjust their behaviour to changed circumstances. Some species are very flexible and learn new food sources or behaviours quickly; others have strong specialized needs and react more sensitively to changes. These differences influence how well different animal species cope in various housing systems.
For classifying animal welfare, models such as the "Five Domains" are used today in addition to the Five Freedoms; the Five Domains model more explicitly addresses physical states, the environment and mental experiences. Such models help to consider not only physical health indicators but also emotional states and opportunities to perform natural behaviours. In practice this means: welfare assessment must combine several aspects, not only single measures (e.g. weight, disease).
Scientific consensus in this area is that behaviour is a very important indicator of welfare because it directly reveals whether an animal can perform its typical behaviours and whether it shows stress or suffering. At the same time there are uncertainties about how to quantitatively evaluate certain behavioural patterns and which thresholds define "sufficiently species-appropriate" — this depends on species, life cycle and context.
Part 3 (10 minutes): Applications, limitations and short thought exercises
Concrete application 1: Barn design. If you know that chickens like to scratch and dustbathe, it follows that a barn with suitable litter, outdoor access and perches is more species-appropriate than a barn without such possibilities. The same applies to pigs, which need enrichment material for rooting, or cattle, which require adequate lying and grazing areas. Such applications directly follow from observations of natural behaviours (Encyclopaedia Britannica: Chicken, Pig) and from the principles of animal welfare models (Five Freedoms, OIE).
Concrete application 2: Management and handling. Because many animals have social needs, socially appropriate handling reduces stress and thereby susceptibility to disease. This means composing groups, considering social structures and minimizing stressors (sudden changes, loud noises). Practical implementation, however, requires species- and situation-specific knowledge and often compromises between economic and welfare-related requirements.
Limits of knowledge and uncertainties: There is no universal threshold at which housing is "species-appropriate"; many assessments are context-dependent and must be made with regard to species and life stage. Measuring emotions and welfare in animals is also scientifically challenging: indicators such as behavioural changes, hormones or performance data provide clues, but each method has limits and must be interpreted critically. In addition, species differ in adaptability — what is acceptable for one species may be insufficient for another.
Short thought exercises for class (about 3–4 minutes discussion per task):
1) Imagine a chicken barn provides unlimited food and warmth, but no sandy ground, no perches and no outdoor access. Which behaviours are missing and what consequences could that have? Which three changes would you prioritize and why?
2) A farmer wants to improve the health of his pigs. He is considering whether to give more space per animal or more enrichment material (e.g. straw). What effects would you expect from both measures? What does behavioral biology say about this?
3) Why is it important to know whether a behaviour is innate or learned when planning housing conditions? Give an example where learning can help compensate for a restriction.
In conclusion: Behavioral biology provides important foundations for judging what "species-appropriate" means. Observations of natural behaviours, knowledge about instincts and learning processes, and models for assessing animal welfare must be combined. Scientific practices and concrete housing measures must be chosen species- and situation-specifically; blanket statements are usually not sufficient.
Note on uncertainties: Some detailed questions — for example exact minimum areas for different age groups, measurable thresholds for stress hormones, or the assessment of complex emotional states — are subjects of current research and not fully standardized. Those responsible must therefore use existing knowledge and remain open to new scientific findings.
